Gerard de Visme was born in 1726 and came to Portugal aged 20 (1746).
There is a small booklet concerning De Visme and his bookplate published 1922 in Portuguese by Colonel Henrique de Campos Ferreira Lima.
A newspaper article (O Século 1898) states that towards the end of 1785 Gerard de Visme promised the princess Carlota Joaquina " that he would leave in Portugal an eternal souvenir of his time in the kingdom".
Monserrate is certainly the greatest testimony to this desire, but there are others such as the British Hospital and the English Church parsonage, also built by Devisme.
