Another old rose has appeared at Monserrate



Reappeared amongst the vincas and foxgloves on the margin of old rose garden. A welcome return ... awaiting ID?

  4. 'Great Cabbage of Holland'is often used in a generic way to describe any large flowered, fully petaled antique rose. There is disagreement as to whether it is from Vibert or is much older. It is a lovely thing and very useful in the garden for its late and prolonged bloom season. It continues to produce buds and blooms into July here when just about every other rose is taking a short, earned rest.

    Introduced in 1589.
